lost converter lockup..

I noticed i wasn't feeling that familiar lurch of the car when the converter locks up anymore.Tranny was rebuilt about 5 years ago and have been locking up the converter with a vacuum switch since i run a carbed 350.Everything has run fine untill now.I've read a bunch of posts about excess heat killing the tranny with out lockup but i'm wondering if i can get away with it for awhile since i have a trans cooler(direct to and from,)and run 3:42 gears in the rear end.My cruising speed rpm would be quite abit higher than my converter stall speed i would think.Would the extra heat be any worse than running a high stall converter? They're supposed to generate more heat also do to increased slippage. That being said,i wouldn't mind if anybody had some idea what was wrong with this .I'm still getting voltage at the plug,so the switch is still good.I'm gonna have to take the pan off aren't i?

Its probably the solenoid stuck or something but only pulling the pan will tell...

For the time being as long as you have an external trans cooler (not just the one in the rad) their shouldnt be any heat issues as long as you dont beat the crap out of it.

just don't be ponding on it. - Yes, it's probably the lock-up solenoid. Simple to replace, but yes, you'll have to drop the pan. Unless you've done it recently, changing the filter and fluid should be done anyhow. - Also, most 700r's have a reduced flow to the cooler when in OD w/o lock-up. This keeps more psi/fluid in the trans and converter to help keep the converter from slipping excessively. This means that less fluid is going to/through the cooler and the trans can heat easier......

just remember that however many rpm lock-up took out of the motor is how much the converter is slipping....

Thanks for the responses,i was just into the transmission last season to change the kick-down valve, changed the fluid and filter at the same time.Thats why i'm alittle bummed about having to go there again.I called a local transmission shop in the area and they have the solenoids in stock,103$ + taxes.Does that seem alittle steep to anybody else?I guess it's cheaper than a new transmission though. If i have to pull the pan again,i'm going to maybe do a few other things at the same time to make it worth my while, like maybe a boost valve or full shift kit.
