700r4 TailShaft bearing

My yoke that slips onto the output shaft on the transmission wobbles up and down, side to side.. U-joints are fine, The tailshaft seal doesnt leak.. Just quite a bit of play on that output shaft.. I had a brand new tranny installed about 1500 miles ago.... I am not sure if theres a bearing in the tailshaft or not..

Thanks for any help, Nick

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
No bearing, just a bushing.

It can be changed while the trans is assembled and installed, with the right tools. Call around to transmission shops in your area, and find someone that has those tools. The puller looks sort of like a gear puller, except the teeth point outwards, and they're real thin. The installer looks like a piece of pipe.

Last time I had that done (no I don't have the tools ), I paid $25, and it took less than 10 minutes from drive-in to drive-out.

if you take the tailhousing off, the same piece of pipe and/or socket will serve to remove and install the new one. just make a note of the installed depth and set it the same for the new one.

Remove the driveshaft and wiggle the output shaft on the trans by hand. If it moves alot, the case bushing is worn out or has spun. Alot of guys do not change the case bushing during an overhaul.

its normal for the output shaft to wiggle a little bit when the driveshaft is out...the bushings are the only things the entire gear train rides on! the tail bushing is VERY often overlooked (read: ignored) during rebuilds. i have seen quite a few that make me wonder why the driveshaft is even able to turn.

The driveshaft is hooked up and it still wobbles... The warranty for the tranny is still Good.. and i had a chevrolet dealer install it so, i guess, i shall make a phone call tomarrow, since they are closed now...

Thanks Alot guys! I was going to ignore it because the tranny is like a month old, and has less than 2,000 miles on it.. i figured it was normal, but i thought id ask.. Good thing i did!

Thanks Again, Nick Hall
