Do you have an aftermarket shifter?

What do you mean by "stock one out of a different car?"

A stock shifter, but not the one that came with the car?

or

You're asking this question for someone else's car (and not your own)?

Worn out synchro is one way to go.

The reason I was asking about the shifter is that this has happened to me, but only because the stops on my shifter weren't adjusted properly (aftermarket shifter). Obviously not the case with your issue.
