tranny and rear end in a 91 rs camaro
Im looking at buying a 91 rs camaro. it supposedly has a 350 in it. im not sure if the car origionally had a v6 or a 305 in it. what if any drive train differences did the v6 and 305 cars have? im assuming these cars came with a 10 bolt rear?? from what i researched, all of the 91 camaros had either the 700 r4 tranny or the t5. is this wrong? ive searched but not found any definate answers. thanks for your info!

Well camaro's came with 9 and 10 bolt rearends, but since it is a 91 it probly has a 7.5 20 bolt. And to the best of my knowledge the 700r4 and t5 were the only tranys offered in a 91.

The last year of the nine bolts was 89, so it should be a 10 bolt as long as it's the original rearend. A V8 RS would get 2.73 gears with a 700r4 or 3.08 gears with a T5. V6 RS's usually got 3.23's with an auto and 3.42's with a standard trans. If you look at the RPO codes on the tag inside the console, you can tell which ratio you have. GU2=2.73, GU4=3.08, GU5-3.23, and GU6=3.42.

thanks for the info guys. how much hp do you think a stock t5 and 700r4 will handle?
In stock form the 700r4 is definitely stronger than the T5. There's a reason why GM never put the T5 behind the 350 powered cars. I'd say a stock 700r4 could handle up to around 300 H.P, and anything over about 200 H.P. with a T5 is a good gamble. However, high torque and great traction are the two things that kill a tranny the fastest.
