I have a 1991 Trans am. Also having the 700r4 in it. I did not know when i bought the car they had put a new TV cable ( pretty much a shift cable ) in my car. Mine was doing the same thing. Try adjusting the TV cable and see if that helps. If that doesn't then go for the obvious first. Check fluid! ( also smell to see if its got a burt smell. Tranny fuild smells different when hot anyways but if its burnt bad enough for damage u will beable to tell as soon as the dipstick get with in a couple inches of your nose )

If that checks out fine. Spend the extra money and drop the tranny pan and put a new filter in there. Better flow = less heat and less work on the pump. Keeps everthing moving wonderfully. As much as i hate these after part stores and plan on going to a local one. I would suggest O`reillys for your tranny filter and buy the Pioneer one!!!! Autozone will have one for you ( not pioneer ) but the hole for the fluid is on the top of the filter instead of the bottom. The digram even shows the "old style" ( which you DEFENTLY wanna stick with ) and the new style ( Which FRIED one of my 700R4"s ) If tranny filter don't fix the problem and assuming the tranny is not shot, then don't consider it a waiste of money but as an investment in a long living tranny!
Post reply after your evaluation on your tranny and Me and probley many other TGO member will be more than happy to help!

Thanks
Derrick

oh and btw that is not normally for it do shift like that. Its actually really HARD on the tranny cause it was not designed to shift like that.

if you fried a tranny with the later style filter for the 4l60(aux. 700r4), then you did something wrong. all i ever build mine with is the late style.

to the original poster, sounds like you need to adjust your shift cable. do a search as it has been docimented lots of times.
