rear end question

what is the stock length of the rears in our cars I am going to build a 9" for my 87 Camaro and found a 60" 9 housing with 31 spline axles for $100 and was thinking about doing it in the 4th gen length so I can use the vette z06 rims so I guess if you know either 3rd or 4th gen rear length it would help since the 4th gen rear is 4" wider (2" per side) thanks in advance

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
3rd is about 61¼"wheel flange to wheel flange; 4th is about 64".

Most stock 9" rears are crap and not worth the effort. There's nothing magical about them, they're no better than anything else. The ones that are popular in racing AREN'T stock ones; the deal is, it's a good PLATFORM to build off of, not some kind of holy grail as you find it in the junkyard.

About the only stock ones that are worth the effort are the nodular iron case ones; which are getting hard to come by.

There's a reason that even racers with fab skills and equipment use aftermarket ones, and not junkyard ones. Unless you just want some kind of bragging rights to tell people "I've got a 9" " and its actual STRENGTH isn't an issue, or you REALLY KNOW which one this is, then it's not a good starting point. There's a reason it's $100, instead of $1000 or whatever; and it's not because it's a highly sought-after gem in great demand by people who want only the best and KNOW what they're looking at.

nodular's are reasonably easy to find I can find them all day for around $200 but I like the quick change gears and not having c clips. Thanks for the measurements though. thx
