Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Take the axles out, and the 4 bolts out of the carrier caps, and pry the carrier out with a tire tool or something.

Knock the pinion out with a hammer AND A PIECE OF WOOD TO PAD IT. Once you knock it loose in the tail bearing, it'll slide the rest of the way out easily. DO NOT hit the pinion directly with a hammer; things chip and fly out and get in people's eyes, and even if that doesn't happen, it's REAL EASY to mushroom the threads over to where it can't be re-used.
