Which rear gear to run?

Im getting a new 12 bolt rear when I get back from Iraq and was wondering which rear gear I SHOULD run. My engine is a Miniram'ed 383, WILL have AFR 210 eliminator comp heads, TPIS ZZX cam, (spinning it to 6200 rpm) SLP 1 3/4 headers 3" exhaust, running thru a '94 T-56 tranny. Right now I have 4.10's in my stock 10 bolt but never got to the strip to run em. The car will be road raced and Drag raced 5 or 6 times a year I suppose and it becomes my daily driver in the summer. 4.10's on the street now is not bad, but I was wondering if I may be better off with a 3.73 or just staying with a 4.10? Thanks.

It's been a long time since I ran 4.xx gears in my old 73 Vega street / bracket racer... but, I'm now running 3.73's in my 96Z. Good for get up and go plus it only turns a little over 2K on the tach when cruising down the highway. My ecm tuner runs 4.11's in his Z and really likes them so, guess it just depends on what fit's your need or driving habits.

By the way, hat's off to you for serving in IRAQ!

Thanks! I have the 4.10's now and to me there streetable for a daily driver with the 6 speed, but I guess my question is more twords the drag strip. How many guys have a simlar shift 6000/6200 rpm with a T-56 using a 3.73/4.10 gears? What rpm are you going thru the lights at in 4th gear? I know I dont have my tire size in inches, but just trying to see what gear would be better suited for that, and what size drag radial did you use? Either gear will work for me on the street, but one, im sure would work better at the track. Thanks.

I say 3.73's would be your best choice with the power your making and if your using street size tires, that's if you plan on keeping it in 4th gear through the traps. 6000RPM's on my car would be about 120MPH which should be close to what your car might trap at the track. Now if your planning on going with a 28" tire I'am guessing 4.10 would be better.

Oh absoultly, I dont want to have to shift into 5th. I was wondering what rpm/mph I would end up going thru the traps in 4th would be. I really dont have any drag radials now, so I could buy whatever I want/need at this point. Im just trying to figure out which gear to go with. Im thinking I may go with the 3.73 you suggested Tony, it really depends what would be a better gear for the track. I might be able to squeze a few extra mpg out of it on the freeway with the 3.73's too. LOL

If you go with a 275/60/15 DR (~ 27" tall) and 4.10 gears, you'll be at 121.5 MPH at 6200 in 4th.

With 3.73s you can run up to 133.6 MPH in 4th.
