th400 questions

new to turbo 400 tranny and had a couple questions. 1st do they have a kickdown cable or is it elec? someone told me a while back there is no kickdown cable? and I have seen some electric kickdown swtich for the th400. also is there a lockup version available and would it be beneficial to have? I would think just an added expense since mileage won't be the greatest one way or another. sorry to sound like a dumba** but I have always dealt with motors and 700r's.

You are correct about the switch. There is a switch on the gas pedle that handles kickdown. There are some later model TH400 transmissions that are lockup but that just means more components to worry about. The fuel mileage will not be that much different between the two.

actually, most T400 have a vaccum modulator that, in conjunction with the governenor, controls the shifts.
- a lock-up tq converter was never made.

so the modulator works in conj with the switch on the gas pedal for the passing gear?

yes, which is why different sized modulators make difference in shift firmness and rpm levels, but both work in conjunction with the governor.
