Trany Suggestions
Hi, I'm new here so don't bust my chops to bad, but I have a 89 IROC-Z with the 5.7 TPI. The motor is beefed alittle ( 1/4 lift cam, polished ported intake, forged pistons, polished ported plenum, hooker headers + 3" dual straite pipe, etc.) and I swaped the rear end for a 3.73 rear end from a Trans AM.
I've owned the car for about 6 months now and Burned 3 700R4's. I can't keep rebuilding/ buying new ones. My freind told me to convert it to a 5 or 6 speed manual, but that seems like WAY too much work and money. I need suggestions ( the cheaper the better) to my problem.
By the way, I don't know what I did to the last transmissions, I assume they weren't strong enough to handle the beefed up motor. The first one just burned up and wouldn't shift out of 1st, (manualy or in Drive) and i swaped that one out for a 700r4 out of a 5.0tpi Trans Am. That ones pump burst after 100 miles. The one in it right now is kinda weird though. I took both transmissions to a very reputable shop in town. The guy rebuilt the trans am 700 with the pump out of my old trany ( was almost brand-new) it worked like a charm. Camaro ran great for about 2 months then I was raceing my freinds SRT-4 and at about 70 MPH my camaro refused to shift. I pulled off and checked everyhting out. Fluid was good, electronics all hooked up properly, and no exsessive heat or strange smells (gotta love burned clutch plate stench). Anyway, the transmission works except it will only use 1st and 2nd and reverse. I can't get it to shift no matter what.
Besides suggestions for what to do about a new transmission, I really would like to know what happened to this one, you know to pervent it from happening again.

Are you getting the correct adjustment to the TV cable? The TV cable must be adjusted correctly or the tranny will fry quick.

That totally sounds like a misadjusted cable. Having seen a 700r4 killed quicker than yours due to that, your symptoms indicate misadjustment. There are threads and even a tech article, I think.
