begginer question

To be honest, I know nothing about transmissions ( I mean, I know what they are) but I have no idea what kind of transmission my Trans Am has (and I know is automatic btw, lol) but what I dont know is if my tranny is a 700r4, a 4L60 , standard, or TH350 and what do those codes stand for?.Just got the car like 3 months ago as a HS graduation gift. Can anybody school me on this? Just in case my car is a 1987 Trans Am Gta , automatic transmission.

If the car's unaltered and stock, the auto is a 700r4.

The easiest way to tell (most of the time) is by the shape of the transmission oil pan. Search the net for transmission gaskets as almost all transmissions take a different shaped gasket.

it should be the 700r4 unless it was changed to a th350 probly not though The easiest way to check is how novatuc described or u could get your rpo codes and look them up on this site

Here's an even easier way. If it clicks into overdrive on the highway, well its a 700R4. TH350's dont have overdrive. I very highly doubt its a 4L60 in an 87 GTA.

Smallblock is right. I don't think 4L60s were put into F-bodies until 93, with the rollout of the 4th gen. I'd put my next paycheck on it being a 700r4.

700R4 has 4 forward gears, TH300 have 3.

Thats one clue.

4l60e is electronic controled, not till later years I think 93+ .
