Shifting hard!

I have a automatic v8 305 5.0 tpi fuel injected 1986 trans am. The transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner at like 90,000 miles. It has 100,000 on it now.

When I shift into drive my car nearly jumps. It drives fine and shifts ok in other gears. Never have any problems once shifting.

Can there be something with my fluid? Or is it trying to tell me something?

Or is that what a rebuilt automatic transmission should do if rebuilt by the other owner?

Maybe I can have a mechanic check the bolts. But if it was that then i thinkk it would do that every time i shift into anything. but worth looking into. any other ideas?

Idle set a bit high maybe?

The older trannys did slam into gear pretty good, especially if it was idling high. The newer 88+? had a revision on the tranny (secondary accumulator i believe) that smoothed this out...

Broken tranny mounts are the norm for these cars. Checking bolts will not help, To check this just slide a jack under the tailshaft of the tranny and slowly jack it up, if it starts to try and lift the car its good. but you may find that the rubber block has seperated.

Typically a broken tranny mount will wreak some havvoc though. At anything more than part throttle, during shifting the tranny will jump up and the yolk will smash into the tunnel!

Well my min-idle still needs to be set i jsut installed a new IAC Valve along with new throttle body. So I still need to set my TPS sensor and IAC. It is idling around 1000 rpm then drifts down to mid range between 1000 and 0rpm. I just needed to get it to the shop to install my ypipe and new cat for emmsions. It passed beautifally. But I will set it the sensors properly and se if taht has any effect on my shifting.

And hopfully that is it. I don't need any more problems but thats part of the fun.

is it possible to easily adapt or just install an automatic transmission mean't for a 88-92 trans am to an earlier model like my 86? so it will have that secondary accumulator to help smooth my shifting.

Keep in mind i'm referring to my shifter when i manually shift between neutral reverse and drive and park. not the automatic shifting while driving.

I know you knew what i meant before just covering my bases for everyone else.

thanks and let me know if you know
