Rear End Whine
Last night we had our first real freeze, and now my car (350 w/700-R4) makes a whining noise at about fifty three or so miles an hour, or when it's in fourth gear, between 1500 and 1750 RPM. It stops at just over 1750, and I can't hear it before 1500, it doesn't make the noise in neutral, and I couldn't reproduce the sound in lower gears, although I think it might be there. It didn't do this before the freeze. Also, it now feels like I'm engine braking while the car is in first gear, but fine in every other gear. And before the freeze my rear end made a light ticking noise when letting off the gas, it's not there during acceleration, idle, or anything else, only when the engine is slowing down the car because I let off the gas. I searched, and it seems that ticking and whining could be anything from a bad U-Joint to bad bearings to a dying transmission/rearend combo. Anyone have any ideas? If the answer is for me to take it to a shop, anyone know how much I should expect to pay for the examination and any work?

Anyone got any ideas? I did some further testing, and I found that it only makes the hum noise while in overdrive at those RPM ranges. I put it in third, and accelerated to the speed range where I was having whine, and it wasn't there. I shifted up to overdrive, and badabing. Whine. Not sure if the clicking is still there. The engine brake feeling is gone. Thanks for any help.

Update. Got it up on a lift, took off the diff cover, drained it, put in new addtive and fluid. Didn't look bad for just hitting mile 125,000. Did an oil change. Changed the fuel filter. Tranny time. The fluid smells burnt. It was low fluid. I think the whine's coming from it, not the diff.
