transmission survival

i dono if this is in the right place but what the heck yall got answers ( i hope) so i have a 1986 iroc z with a 700R4 transmission. i just recently had to replace it because all the gears went out except 1st. this is an automatic by the way. so i think the problem is that when i start the car and have it in park (or neutral) the motor is reving up so high it hits the gears to hard when it engages. so i need help in finding out what's making it rev so high. i was thinking throtal positioning sensor? maybe i have no clue.

What are your RPM's at in park? When it's in drive? Was it leaking at all before? Have you put a shift kit in it?

in park or neutral the RPM's are at about 2500 (i know way to high) and then when you put it into gear it goes down to around a 1000 RPM's. it was leaking before but i have no clue where. and the knew transmission i put into it still leaks at the yoke because its old and really shity. i did have a shift kit put into it and i had all the lines replaced from plastic to metal.

Id replace the yoke if its badly worn. Not too hard to do. There are alot of things that can make the car idle high. Worn throttle shaft, incorrect carb settings, vacuum leak, etc. Tech/general engine may be a better place to ask about the engine part of it.

The 1986 & earlier units did not have a forward accumulator, which softened the neutral/park to drive engagement. The high idle does not help. If you lost 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear all at once, and now you have 1st gear only, the governor would be the first place to check for broken or stripped gear. Let me know what you find?

Well that would explain why mine (1984 model) shifts hard from park to drive...I've always wondered about that. It only got worse when I added the shift kit.

so is it possible to put a forward accumulator on a 86? or would it be a lot easier to just find out what's making it happen now and fix that? also on the yoke... is this just a dealership part? i've looked around and couldn't find it. i have a mechanic friend and he told me its gonna cost me around 300$ just for the part not to mention the amount of time to put it in.. is this true?

it shouldnt be quite that bad for a yolk, even from a dealer.

Install time is very short, that is, if you have a vise. It takes about 2min to unbolt the u-joint from the pinion then pull the entire driveshaft out. About 5min in the vise and you have the front u-joint out and the new u-joint and yolk installed. slide the slip yolk into the tranny, tighten up the bolts on the pinion side u-joint and your good to go.
