200C to 700R4
200C to 700R4
I was wondering how hard it is to switch from a 200C to a 700R4 in my '82 Camaro? Also, can I just get a 700R4 out of a blazer or s10 or another GM vheicle, or does the tranny need to be from another camaro? I really don't know to much about autos, I know the five speeds much better. Thanks

you need a 2wd one from any vehicle except a later years caprice, or a corvette
but you will need the tailshaft housing for it from an F-body 700r4 tranny since they are unique
otherwise they are all the same externally except for the corvette and later caprice ones,
i think the caprice ones changed in 92 when the body style changed, they are a shorter oddball length like the corvette ones are
but in the 80s they were just the same as all the rest, the normal length
try to get a v-8 one, the v-8 trannies have more clutch discs and other stuff, try to avoid the 4.3L ones in the s-series trucks, try to get a full size car one or a full size truck one if at all possible, one behind at least a 305, if not a 350, or bigger, and try to get an '87-up one
and you will need an F body tailshaft housing, because only the f body one shave the special holes to mount the TQ arm mount parts to
the 200C is 3" shorter than a 700r4 so youre gonna have to find an 84-up driveshaft, but they are dirt common everyone has one or more of them laying around including myself
you will also need a 700r4/T-5 torque arm and TQ arm mount setup and will have to move the crossmember back
this is the reason why i put a th350 in my 200c t/a instead of a 700r4, because i wasnt going to go through having to swap everything out just to put in a 700r4 in which arent the most reliable trannies anyways
the th350 pops right in place of the 200c trans nothing needs moved or swapped out, and i couldnt care anyt less about gas mileage, im not a wuss about gas milage like other ppl are, i take reliability over gas milage any day, and lots less hassle too
youll be able to sell the 200c driveshft to stupid ppl who are swapping from a 4 speed or 200c to a th350 and arent smart enough to knwo that a 6" tail th350 is the same length as a 200c
youll be able to sell the 200c shaft for a good little chunk
my 82 was a 200c car originally,
i swapped in a th350
good luck

Thanks for all the info fast 68. I hear what you are saying about the reliability issues with the 700R4, that has me a little worried too. But the turbo 350 wouldn't be for me, I drive about 30miles of highway a day at 60mph+, so that overdrive would come in handy. Also, i'm in high school, so I don't make all that much money, and I'm sick of spending it all on gas, when I could be buying performance parts. I go back and fourth with automatic or 5 speed, and I have kind of been leaning towards swapping in a wc T5, lately. Yeah I know, everyone is going to say I will blow out a T5, but I'm not going to make the car hook up, and I'm pretty easy on the car for the most part. The engine setup I'll be running will be: 94 chev blazer 350, edelbrock performer RPM cam, edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 600 carb, and hedman long tube headers. Should be good for around 300hp, and mabey mid 300s or better for torque.
