LS1 T56s use a completely different bellhousing bolt pattern as well as several other differences. It can be done but not without a lot of work and modifications. 93-97 LT1 T56s bolt right up.

If you have an LS1 T56 set-up sell it and buy an LT1 T56 set-up. The going market rate is roughly the same for the two and it is far easier to sell one and buy the other. You can convert as mentioned above but it is not worth it when you can basically exchange the unit you have for the the one you need without any further damage to your wallet.

You could catch some good money for the LS1 T56 over at LS1Tech.com if you already have it. The input shaft on the Tremec (LS1) T56 is a different length, also the clutch setup is different and flywheel. If your not using an LS1 your better off going LT1 (borg-warner version) or aftermarket. Also the Tremec version is rated for less torque than the BW version if I recall correctly
