Hello t-5 gurus, I tried and looked on the threads but found nothing, I wanted to know, when I have my car in nuetral I hear like something is spinning in the tranny but as soon as I step on the clutch the noise stops, is this normal, I have a B&m shifter, could this be the problem. Also when I take off on on 1st and 2nd I hear a whine, wanted to know if this could mean I need to drain and refill the tranny. I am new to the t-5 and would like to know a little more about it. Also the drain and refill plug are on the passenger right? Help please!

No, that's not normal. It sounds like either the throw-out bearing is bad, or something else seriously wrong with the clutch.

Re: 1988 Iroc T-5 Question
Thanks for the info Kevin91Z,
I forgot to mention, the shift still seem firm, no hesitation and it does not take extra power from me to put it in gear, if it was the throw-out bearing wouldn't that make me struggle putting into gear, the tranny still picks up with no hesitation. And if it comes out to be either one of these problems which do you recommend, install new clutch package, rebuild, or just put it in a new tranny.
thanks

Re: 1988 Iroc T-5 Question
When the trans is in neutral and the clutch pedal is out (foot off of it), the trans is spinning inside. Some noise is normal. As to "how much", well, it's pretty hard to type that over the Internet; and it's too noisy in here right now, so I can't even hear yours to tell you if it seems excessive to me.

When you push the clutch in, you disconnect the engine from the transmission. The parts inside the trans all coast to a stop. Meanwhile, the throwout bearing is at MAXIMUM load, because your foot is on the clutch, pressing on it. If it's quiet at that time, then the TOB is probably OK.

Likewise, a certain amount of whine in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 5th is normal. Go drive some similar vehicles (RWD w/T-5) such as S trucks or Mustangs or other F cars, and compare your noise to them. If yours is similar, then it's OK. If it's alot louder, then your transmission has worn bearings in it.

Yes you should change the fluid. That's basic maintenance on any transmission in any car, noise or no; especially when you just bought it as you appear to have (since you say you're "new to the T-5", I'm guessing it's "new to you", as well?). Your year of T-5 should take near 3 quarts of ATF. Changing the fluid however will not likely affect the sound.

Yes the drain & fill plugs are on the pass side. DO NOT remove the thing on the driver's side that looks like a plug, or you WILL be removing and reassembling the transmission!!!

From your description, I don't see anything wrong with your clutch.

No the shifter is not "the problem". All it is, is a handle. It does however transmit more noise to the interior than the stock one, because it's solid metal whereas the stock one had a plastic section to help screen out some of the noise.

Re: 1988 Iroc T-5 Question
The noise is not to the point that it annoys me, it does seem that the TOB is ok because no noise is made when the clutch pedal is stepped on (clutch pressed in). So my tranny seems OK, thank god, I had a 5.0 5 speed mustang and the whine was about the same, I just wanted to know since this is my dream car and do not want to let it fall maintenance wise, I got it with 78k original miles and everything was kept up. I will drain and refill the tranny ASAP.
