Posi outta Monte SS worth the time or not??

i believe is 86 or so.. but i'll find out tomorow... We have two monte's in the family right now and one is getting parted out so i was thinking of stealing the guts of the SS rear end for the posi...

im having trouble finding out what the rear ratio is on it... any sites that have good source??

also is it worth me being cheap and doing this or prolly i should just get a new one??

why not? if the guy has a posi and you need one go right ahead. The only thing for sure problem I forsee is the year of the car. the rear in the monte is a 26 spline, and the rear in your camaro according to your profile will be a 28 spline. You said you weren't sure of the year of the car, but only the 88's had the 28 spline to my knowlege. all the rest of them were 26 spline, which obviously will not fit in your car.

Cheers!!!

P.S. 83-84 monte SS's had a 3.42 rear end, 85-88 monte SS's had the 3.73 rear end.

wow finally some decent answers... lol thanks a bunch.... IIRC my dad said its 85.

did you know how hard it is to find specific info on the internet now-a-days... a week of searching so far and you've been the most help.

yea i have a 91 rear end.... what is the difference with the splines. the posi carrier right? hmmm so i'd be able to use the gears tho?? they would work with my carrier?

what would i need to do to put that posi in my car, i doubt i can convert it to work with my axles can i?

how can i identify an axle year? i know one of the monte's we have is an 84 LE or watever the base model is and it prolly has a swapped rear, i dont think they had posi in the base

Re: Posi outta Monte SS worth the time or not??

As far as I am aware, you could get a posi with any monte, regardless of it being an SS or not. An issue you might want to address is "do I really want to swap the carrier and axles out to get a posi". Obviously you cannot put a 26 spline posi carrier in a 28 spline axle'd car. You will have to use the carrier from the monte and then a pre 88 camaro or firebird 26 spline set of axles. The ones in the monte will be too wide to my knowlege. There is a way to tell the year of the axle by looking at the code stamped on the back of the housing. there will be a 2 or 3 letter (Most of the time it will be 2) sequence that will tell the axle ratio, and there will be a month and date etched into the housing right beside it. This will be located on the passenger side axle tube, facing the front of the car. Chances are the axle hasn't been swapped, with the boat anchor the 305 that the SS was equipted with there is almost no way someone could shell one to warrant a replacement.

cheers!!!

all in all it isn't worth it by my defination of worth it. you have a 28 spline carrier now, and axles to match. you'd be putting in a weak posi from the monte and you'd need to down grade to 26 spline axles to make it work. if you do decide to do it i have a set of 26 spline axles.

Ahhh both point taken i see..... well if i was leaving the 305 in the car then i'd go for it and worry about, but.,....... my 350 will grenade the tranny and the rear in no time sooo i think i'll leave it in the monte....

THANKS!!

If its still got factory gears in it, spin the ring gear over untill you see some numbers stamped in the side. It will say what the tooth-count is for the ring and pinion thats there. You can just do the math to figure out the ratio.
