I have been trying to figure out for a few days what I am going to do about this transmission problem I am having, I have asked around these forums a couple times, but I don't think I have really got what I am looking for. It may be because I really don't know much about cars. anyways, here goes one last time.

I have a '91 firebird with a 3.1 v6, a few weeks ago i heard it making a knocking noise( the noise they make before the motor blows) and notices that there was a large oil puddle under my car, apparently I hit somthing and busted a hole in the bottom of my oil pan, the engine hasn't blown yet, but I am pretty sure it will, So i called an old friend who has a 305 out of an '87 camaro to sell me for $100. then everyone tells me I will need a new transmission because the old 5speed i have in my firebird will not mount up. the old friend also has a turbo 350 that needs rebuild that I can get rebuilt costing me a total of $120, I would really like to keep my car a Manual, but I am finding out everywhere I look that I can't afford that, I live in delaware, Ohio, so most of the options require Shipping, I did find a junkyard nearby that has a t-56 for $350 but when i called to ask for it the guy asked me if i had a "valve assembly" or something, he said it was an extension piece coming off of the tail of my transmission or something and I had no idea. anyways I am in a bad place being car illiterate and trying to find a transmission that I can afford and bolt onto the 305. any and all advice will be greatly appreciated, please keep in mind that I am car illiterate so try to explain things in a less car jargonal way, i know a little about cars from all my bad luck with cars breaking down and fising them with my brother, but that is about all.
