T56 front / intermediate plate removal

I have an LS1 T56.

I need to remove the front plate (the "transmission front adapter" part 1A in T56_service_manual.pdf on page 10) to replace it with a mcleod piece which has a pivot ball mount for mechanical clutch linkage.

From what I can tell, this means that the shaft endplay must be checked/reset due to the removal of shims 7 and 102 (as well as the fact that i'm replacing the entire front plate). The service manual PDf indicates that the transmission has to be torn down even further to do this work.

1) is this an accurate portrayal of the work required?

2) is this work best left to the "pros", or within reach of someone who has rebuilt many performance engines (successfully, at that!) before?

3) is any further documentation beyond the service manual needed/necessary? tools?
