Transmission Going?

I recently purchased 1987 Camaro (base style) that originally had a 2.8 L engine, but was replaced with a 5.7 L out of an 87 IROC by the previous owner. I am assuming that they also switched the transmission from the v6.

My problem is that when I put it in drive/reverse, it takes about to seconds to catch the gear. My first guess is that it needs to be rebuilt. Could it be that the bands are just lose? It shifts nicely when its going down the road. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Re: Transmission Going?

there is only one band in the 700r4 and you can't adjust it without taking the servo out and replacing/modifying the apply pin. check the level and condition of the fluid. it just might be a little bit low. if the fluid is discolored it may be dirty and need to be changed along with the filter.

Re: Transmission Going?

I checked out the fluid and it looks like it was just replaced, good level and color. I had a look underneath the car and saw that the tranny is missing the front cover. It is also leaking some fluid and I believe it is just because of a few lose bolts. Any theories on something else it could be? I'll have a closer look for anything out of the ordinary.

Re: Transmission Going?

would still still replace the filter. most anything else gets fairly complicated for the home mechanic.

Ok, I'll replace all the fluid and all that goes with that and see how it works
