Looking for the thermal switch that mounts inside the transmission, any ideas?
Hi All
I’m looking for the thermal switch that mounts inside the 700r4 transmission to lock up the converter when the fluid gets hot.
Anybody have a GM part number or can this be bought at local supply houses like autozone, advanced etc…I tried looking online but no luck.
Also does this come with the mounting bracket as well?
Any help would be great; I would like to get this before the weekend so I can get my car back together.
Thanks again!

What happens when you come up to a stop and the converter is still locked because of hot oil? The engine should die.
Why don't you just install an external cooler to keep the oil from getting hot. Excessively hot tranny oil isn't good.

My car has an aluminum radiator and the transmission is plumbed into that. So I don’t think cooling would be an issue.
I just didn’t know if I actually needed this switch or if it made a difference. I have my cover off and wanted to put one in if it was a necessity for proper operation with the ECM.
Otherwise I don’t have a problem not using one if I don't need it
Thanks again for the fast reply!

You didn't have one stock. If you really want one, try asking for one from a 93 Caprice.

I have the 10478100 solenoid harness that according to GM came on the 1990 Camaro's and it shows it on GMpartsdirects website.......what did they do with the end that would normally plug into a thermal switch....not use it?
Thanks again

the factory cooler is great for factory applications. If you're driving hard or adding more power to the car, you should really think about investing in an auxiliary cooler. Over heating the fluid is a comon, although usually slow, death to auto trans.
Go through your factory rad cooler into the aux and back the the trans.
as for your question, as apeiron said, you didn't have one factory.

That looks like the right switch. $30 for that, plus a pan gasket and a few jugs of ATF, for something that's never going to get turned on.
I'd have to look up the harness part number.
