9 Bolt rear end slop

I have the 9 bolt rear end in my car. The problem Im having is whenever I let off the gas and then hit it again there is a loud clunk coming from the rear of the car. I thought it was the transmission mount but I replaced it with a polyurethane one and it is still doing it.

When I had the rear of my car jacked up I noticed there was alot of slop in the rear end, I can turn one wheel about a 1/4 turn then I hear a clunk and the other wheel engages. Is that normal? Would that be what is causing the clunk when I let off the gas and get on it again or is it something else?

The only other thing I think it could be is the torque arm mount cause that is shot too. I just changed the oil and put some new posi additive in it last night and its still doing it. There were no missing or damaged teeth in the rear end that I saw, there wasnt even any small metal shavings. Could something just need readjusting in the rear end?

could possibly be the u joints on the drive shaft are shot, you might try greasing then to see if there is any life left in them. If u joints are ok or replaced and still making the noise, backlash on the pinion gear could be off.

You have to tighten the pee-water out of the pinion nut. Also what about the crush washer?

well when you get a clunk on accel. and decell. that means you have alot of backlash or to much pinion depth. and tightening the pinion nut will do nothing but make it worse. its time for a rebuild my friend. carrier bearings and all. get a ring and pinion, install kit. REUSABLE crush washer (yes they make them. richmond sells them) and carrier bearings. than your clunk will go away. but before i buy anything i would check the condition of the splines on the axle shafts as well as see how much junk is at the bottom of the center section
