Transmission Guru's,Please Help !

My 700r4 chewed the governor gear and pushed the cap out. I pulled over right away and I put the cap back on without checking the gear. Topped up the trans fluid with a quart and drove home. Pulled the governor assembly out when I got home a short distance away to find the gear damaged. The gear is not damaged majorly but it is cracked and has about 5 teeth that are mashed. It looks like a few tiny pieces of the gear may have escaped. Where would be a good place to look for any debris? Should I be pulling the tail shaft off and cleaning it inside? How far could the debris have made it's way into the trans? The trans has about 25k since rebuild and I would like to prevent any other problems before running it again. I did notice on the way home that in 4th gear it had a hard time downshifting to 3rd and sometimes would'nt downshift on it's own. No problems shifting it manually though and hoping it was just the gov gear causing this.
If anyone can help with any suggestions on what they would do in this situation that would be great!
Thanks in advance.

Replace the gear, As for the debris they can only either stay in the pan or in the tail housing. Remove the speedo housing and you should be able to see anything in the tail since its the lowest point though likley these little peices would cause no harm , They cannot get through the filter.
