T5 Compatibility

Whats the difference between a Mustang T5 and a Camaro T5?
How about a Camaro V6 T5 vs a Camaro V8 T5?
Is a T56 a whole new can of worms or is there not much of a difference swapping-wise?

I'm lookin for a T5 or T56 for my '85 L98 project

Re: T5 Compatibility

Mustang T5 and F-body T5 are the same internally, but externally they have a different bellhousing and input shaft. They arent swappable.

F-body V8 and V6 are the same internally, but externally they have a different bellhousing and input shaft (but still different than the Mustang). You could use a V6 T5 with a V8 bellhousing but its not worth it.

There are two tech articles on how to install a T56 into a thirdgen. Check them out. And you can search this forum for anything else.

Re: T5 Compatibility

if the difference between all the transmissions is the input shaft, then why is the mustang not swappable it but the v6 is only not worth it?

Re: T5 Compatibility

The Mustang T5 installs straight up while the F-body T5 installs at at angle. You could get a modular bellhousing from McLeod and a special clutch, but you'd spend more money than a regular F-body V8 T5.
Also, the V6 T5 and the Mustang T5 have steep first gear ratios, something like 3.30:1. The V8 F-body T5 is 2.95:1. That steeper first gear makes them weaker. The Mustang compensates for that with lower rear end gears (2.73's).

Re: T5 Compatibility

Ah thanks for the clarification.
So assuming i could get my hands on a relatively cheap Camaro T56, what would be compatible between cars and what would i have to buy/make. I know the Crossmemebr and Driveshaft are different but are flywheel and bellhousing the same or will i have to go with a modified one of those too? The search function wasnt working the last time i tried it. otherwise id look.

Re: T5 Compatibility

The T-56 swap has been covered a hundred times in exhaustive detail; just page through this forum and look at the titles.

There's also a sticky in the FAQ section, something like "questions about the T-56 swap you haven't thought to ask yet" or something.

Drive shaft is not different. (assuming you use the LT1 T-56, which is the most nearly direct swap) Flywheel and BH are different.

Re: T5 Compatibility

You say the flywheel and bell housing are different, do you mean the T5 flywheel and bellhousing wont work or that neither the T5 nor T56 bellhousing and flywheel will work?

Re: T5 Compatibility

The T-56 requires its own bell housing.

The stock T-56 flywheel will work on your motor if it's 86-up. You will need a "special" one if it's 85-back.

It's covered in exhuastive detail, part #s and everything, in multiple posts. Just scroll back through this forum, one page at a time, and read every one about T-56. You'll find out an INCREDIBLE amount of exactly what you need to know. Pictures, part #s, procedures, measurements, prices, brand names, sources, etc. etc. etc. etc. You unfortunately just gotta do the work yourself for the time being because "search" is TU.
