Gauging condition of rear end...

Checking out an SS rear end tomorrow I think its from a 98. 3.42 posi disk brake with 80,000 miles. I'm looking to bolt this right in to my 91 RS. What should I look for and about what should I pay?

Re: Gauging condition of rear end...

get them to pull the cover off so you can see what it looks like. See if the fluid looks good or if it is different colors or if water is in it. Then spin a tire to see if the posi works. next check the teeth on the gears. are they worn in the middle or is the pattern up, down left, or right of the center of the teeth.

it's okay if the fluid stinks, most do but replace it with Lucas if your change it (will change it right?)

also might want to do a good visual inspection including the brakes ( I've always said a man that lets his brakes squeaks is the same one that doesn't change fluids or take car of his car)

Re: Gauging condition of rear end...

If it has traction control can I still use the prop valve from that car? Or do I need to get a prop valve from a non-traction control 4 Wheel Disk third/4th gen?

Re: Gauging condition of rear end...

Well I made the purchase. 3.42 Posi rear end, complete with good roters and calipers. From a 2000 SS with 80,000 miles. $260. Can anybody tell me anything about the type of differential that would have come with this car?

I would like to do as much as I possibly can to the rear before I install it. Can I easily replace all the seals and bearings without having to set up the gears again? I'd basically like to do as much as I can to freshen it up without having to re set up the gears. Any advice on this?
