3rd to 2nd gen auto transmission

Will my or can I take my third gen transmission 700R4 and put it in my 76 Pontiac with a 350ci Pontiac motor? or what 4 speed would fit behind her? I know modification would have to be done.

No. Chev, both BBC and SBC have a different bellhousing bolt pattern compared to Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Caddy engines. It may be possible to find a 700R4 with a dual bolt pattern bellhousing but I doubt it. Finding a 700R4 in a pickup truck that had a 6.2 diesel will have the BOP pattern but I doubt they would use a 700R4 behind a diesel. A common swap for these diesel trucks when the engine fails is to drop an Olds engine in it's place.

You could get the B.O.P. trans adaptor or try to find a THM 200-4R. The 200-4R was a B.O.P. tranny anyway and used in some Chevy B and G-Bodies.They were also used in late 80's B-Body Cadillacs with the Olds 307 and 350 engines. The 89' turbo T/A and 84-87 Buick Grand Nat'ls used the 200-4R's as well. The 200-4R and TMH 350 have the same dimentions(consider the TMH 200-4R a turbo 350 with overdrive), I believe you could use your same driveshaft.

The 6.2 diesel uses a Chevy transmission bolt pattern and the 700R4 is quite common in 1/2 ton vans and pickups that use this engine. It will not fit a 350 Pontiac without an adapter. There are no dual bolt pattern 700R4s.

The 2004R was used behind a few 5.7 Olds diesels and many 5.0 gasoline Olds engines. These come in dual bolt pattern as well as B-O-P only.

Either transmission is good for your pontiac and the third gen tranny is not necessary to find. Any of these transmissions will work well and the 700R4 adapter is easy to use and cheap. No matter what car or truck they come out of, they all use the same length output shaft and will fit your car. The TV cable hooks up just like your old turbo 350 trans. You just have to move your transmission crossmember back to the next set of holes (for the turbo 400 application cars) and plug everything back in. Depending on the length of your tailshaft you may have to have your driveshaft modified.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help. My National Guard Unit is 150 miles away so I really think the overdrive will help.
