Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

hey folks!

i just browsed through summit like we all do from time to time and found a kind of transmission coolers that was new to me. just type in the title of this thread into summit's search and the whole product line will show up.

is anybody using this? it sounds like a pretty smooth, space-saving alternative to me! would like to hear your opinions as i will get a trans cooler sooner or later but i can't quite figure out where to mount it and hence i would welcome this frame-rail mounted thing.

thanks,
ownor

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

They have been around for years. Good idea for streetrods. We really dont have framerails to accomidate it plus being low to the ground. Lemme see if I got a pic of mine. Its a B&M Supercooler. I mounted it to the angled support in front of the radiator. Gets is away from the AC condensor (I no longer have AC anyway) and the radiator, so that airflow on those arent impeded. Plus it gets its own airflow from the air path under the front. Its on the left and my extra pusher fan is on the right. Sorry..the pic didnt upload right. But you get the idea I think.

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

Hey Mike,

i was just wondering if you looked up the transmission cooler i was talking about on summit -- you just have a standard oil cooler thanks though for telling me where you mounted it, that looks like a very good choice to me!

so actually i was talking bout these "new" (to me) framerail mounted trans coolers, check out this link: http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...04361&D=304361

anybody using these or know about good or bad?

thanks in advance,
regards

If you actually read his response you would see that he said they wont fit on our frame rails, mainly because we dont have them! The style you posted is nothing new and no real advantage over the traditional cooler.

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

I think that those are good for tight areas. But I wouldnt feel comfortable personally having it under my car. Its too low. I did think that it would maybe work as a power-steering cooler to replace the loop rod. Plus they dont give you a rating on what they are intended for. Like most give a GVW rating. I use it as a stand alone and dont have one in the radiator anymore. In Florida it doesnt get cold enough to worry about it being too cold or not warming up soon. And I dont tow or long haul it anyway either. At the track and cruising my Tranny Temp gague stays within reason. I like this one because it has alot of surface area. Its not their biggest one tho. After I get the tranny in (Im rebuilding it right now) I am putting new hard lines and flex lines on it. Im gonna bend them and re-route them a little.

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

You want your transmission cooler in the front of the radiator or A/C condenser. Mounting a cooler under the car or off in the side somewhere isn't that good of an idea. When you're stopped in traffic and have no air flow, you want your radiator fans to be pulling air through the transmission cooler.

I can't see those frame rail type ones like in the link offering any decent cooling. They're too small. 2.5" x 18"? My transmission cooler is 11" x 12".

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

hi folks,

thanks a lot for all the informative replies and sorry mike to have not read thoroughly enough
i still think the frame rail cooler wouldn't be a too bad idea.. i can't reproduce the idea of your argument that says it doesn't cool the transmission in stopped traffic. i might be wrong on this one so be gentle but i thought transmission cooling was induced mainly for cooling oil on long highway runs at higher speeds (sorry guys, but in europe you don't go 70mph or something hehe) or towing. i'm not really too much into automatic transmissions so maybe i missed the point that the ATF is also too hot in a steady stop-and-go traffic. or is a th700 too hot at anytime after warming up? lol
thanks for any info, always trying to learn more

oh and btw, in my country most of the time the car is driven the temperatures outside are between 70-90 degrees, maybe 95 on hot summer days.. do i have to worry about atf being too cold with a bigger cooler like the b&m supercooler of 11" x 12"?

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

No worries here.
The idea was that the air is being drawn up toward the radiator by the fan. That steady airflow even at low speeds and stopped will keep the fluid cool. At idle, you experience more heat than driving in ATF. Being that the torque converter is turning with the motor and trying to coulple the fluid to produce movement. In gear, on the brakes will generate heat. Same reason wby brake standing will turn up the heat rapidly. Heat is a killer in the automatic. So over doing it with a big cooler is OK.

Re: Perma-Cool Frame Rail Transmission Cooler

okay i think i'm convinced now. thank all you guys out there. i still have one question left: how do i connect the trans-cooler? which kind of hoses, what is the total hose length and do i still use the stock cooler in the radiator?

thanks
