Could a bad trans be causing all of this?

Just got an 89 RS with a 305 and a 700r4.
The owner said the engine has 30K on a rebuild but the car itself has 190K, with the transmission being original and never rebuilt.

The transmission sometimes takes forever to go into drive with the engine just revving up w/no movement and it shifts extremely jerky. Like when it goes from 1st to 2nd, the thing kinda jerks forward like its gonna take off but then lets back on speed again
Also, if I floor it, it only accelerates a little bit. Not much of a difference

The engine sometimes dies. Ill press harder on the gas and the rpms will go way low and will take a few seconds to come back up again. If the rpms stay low the engine dies.
My uncle said when I drove it past his house he said you could hear it missing bad.

Any ideas whats all wrong with it? I bought it as is since I didnt have much money to work with. Also, if possible, what are some cheap ways to fix the problems if any?

Ive got a 700r4 I paid $60 for as is. Might see about putting it in the next couple weeks. Hopefully it works

Thanks

Taking a while to shift into drive sounds like low tranny fluid. Or it might need flushed out. The other stuff sounds like the tcc solenoid is not locking up the torque convertor. What RPM are you at doing 60mph. It should be around 1500. If its closer to 2000 then its not locking up. And when your cruising about 35 or 40, take your left foot and push the brake just enough for the brake lights to come but not enough to engage them. Your RPM's should go up about 200-500.
