5-speed hold up?

I know its probably been asked but I cant find the thread.

How much power can the 5-speed take and is there an aftermarket clutch that will withstand 450 hp in one of these trannys?

Thanks!

Re: 5-speed hold up?

i assume you mean the t5/wct5?

sure there are clutches that will hold the power, but case flex is what kills t5's. Some people here are putting down pretty good numbers through a t5, but you have to take care of it, no powershifting, no highrpm clutch dumps.

Basically the general opinion here is that the t5 is not worth putting any money into. If you are worried about strength, you need something else, a TKO 5 speed, or a T56 6 speed.

Re: 5-speed hold up?

Thanks. I just hear some people say "I was pushing 400+ hp through my 5-speed and it held fine". I know that they had less than 300 hp but who can argue with some people.....lol

Thanks again.

It's not the HP but the Torque that kills the trans.
One of my friends had a WC T5 behind a 502 Big Block in an 85 Camaro.
the only thing that kept the trans alive was the clutch would slip or the tires would spin.

Re: 5-speed hold up?

Do yourself a favor and ditch the T5. When I swapped in my 383, It was putting 370 rwtq and 270 rwhp on the chassis dyno. The rearend is still stock. One tire fire. I thought that by leaving the rearend open would help the T5 live. Maybe it did. But even at those power #'s, the T5's would last anywhere between 6 months to 7 days. I've upgraded the engine now and probably on my 7th T5 ( I think, lost count) and sick of swapping them. A different Trans is going in. Now, good luck in figuring out which one. Alot of options, Lt1 T56 seems like the easiest one to fool with and can be made to hold 700 hp.

Knowledge is power.
