700r4, what to do?
700r4, what to do?
Recently I installed a 81 454 in my 89 formula. I used the 700r4 transmission that came with the car, after installing a B&M shift kit, 2500 stall, shifter, and 411s.
Problem: As soon as I lift off the throttle the transmission seems to go into neutral. If I slow, select a lower gear and get back into the throttle the transmission reengages. Am I missing something?
NEW INFO: Before I pulled the tranny I decided to extend the linkage of the TV to a point of relaxation when the carb was in the idle position. I have heard over and over that the proper adjustment was at WOT, beats me, the car is shifting and when the throttle is decreased the transmission follows.
Maybe the adjustment (the way I did it) is wrong, but, now I can at least drive the car while I work on building the TH400 that came with the motor. I probably will not use a 700r4 again, TH350 or TH400, tried and true.
For all of you that have 700r4s that work for you more power to ya. I'm pretty much leary of the beast.

Re: 700r4, what to do?
When the shift kit was installed the valvebody was set up for "no engine braking". Not sure how it's done or corrected. Has to do with the checkballs. Either need to remove one or add one not sure which. Won't hurt any thing, just wear you're brakes faster.
Re: 700r4, what to do?
Spoke to B&M tech. He suggested to recheck the TV cable and recheck the checkball locations and inspect the valve body for "faulty" pressure valves.
Does anyone know how exact the adjustment of the TV cable needs to be? I have adjusted this by starting at zero and letting the cable holder adjust at full throttle.
He also said he was not aware of the vavle body being set at "no engine braking".

Re: 700r4, what to do?
If it's running...re-do the TV cable set.
1. Push and hold the 'D' to unlock the cable. 2. with one hand, move the cable as far as you can to the firewall, release the 'D' to lock cable in place. 3. with engine off, move by hand the throttle lever on the carb/tpi to WOT. You will hear the cable adjust itself. Done...do not move it from here.
