i need to find out if i have a mechanical spedomoter cable or not, does anyone know off hand, or could tell me what to look for?

1988 still used the menchanical speedo (look for a cable from the tranny). I belive they change over to the electrical one in 1990 model.

Right... the Firebirds went to the electronic speedo in 85, the Camaros stayed with the cable until about 90.
One has a plug with wires, the other has a big fat stiff cable with an inner steel rope kind of thing that spins. No mistaking the 2.
Your 88 Bird will have the electronic kind.
