Car: 1987 pontiac Trans Am
Engine: 1988 305 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 2:73 ... I think
optical speed sensor ?

ok took the speed sensor out of my firebirds 700R4 and it is toataly diferent than ive ever seen its black shorter than the otherones almost fits flush with the tranny and it has no gear just a magnatised lip... someone told me its a optical speed sensor hav no idea what year the tranny is .........can anyone tell me what year car had this and wear to get one? THANKS

wait, so firebirds cant swap out gears on the VSS like camaros can? Is this the same for the T5?

I'm not sure but I thought the electronic sensors still used gears that needed to be changed to correct for tire size or axel gears.

That's correct. All 3rd gens use gears for the speedo, even the electronic ones. The sensor the OP is describing sounds like the ones used in 93-up, 4L60E trannys. The newer ones have a reluctor on the output shaft of the trans instead of a drive gear. Makes me wonder if that trans even has a TV cable.
