118,000 miles - TH700R4

Hi all,

I'm going to have a Transgo Kit put in my tranny with in the next couple weeks. I have 118,000 on my 91 Z28, I'm the original owner and have babied the car through it's entire life (not a daily driver). I'm not sure how much the tranny should last. With 118K miles, should I just have it rebuilt or does it have more life left in it? I don't care about spending the money, but don't want to do it if for example I should still get another 50K. But if there is something else I should be changing at the time the transgo kit goes in can you please advise me?

thanks!

If the trans is still in good shape, I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. There's really no point in doing that. Besides, a lot of times a rebuilt trans never works as good as it did originally since most trans shops just throw a basic rebuild kit in them without really knowing how to set everything up correctly again. A good shift kit can actually extend the life of your trans since quicker, firmer shifts cause less wear on the clutches. The only other things you might want to consider having done along with the shift kit would be putting a Corvette shift servo in (very popular mod that firms up the 1-2 shift), and maybe a .500 boost valve (increases line pressure, which helps reduce slippage). If you like to go ***** out on the freeway, you could also have a Corvette style TV sleeve installed. This enables you to stay in OD at full throttle, instead of it downshifting back into 3rd. If it's any consolation, my 700r4 has 240K on it now without a rebuild yet. As long as you change the fluid and filter about every 50K or so, and drive it sensibly, they can last a long, long time before needing a rebuild. Hey, I just noticed the info in your sig. Do you actually have a TH400 in there instead of the stock 700r4? If so, nevermind on the Vette servo, TV sleeve, and the .500 boost valve. If it is a TH400, just have the shift kit installed and call it a day.

240K In the last 4 years I see I've only put about 1 or 2k miles on it. Well...I guess I don't need to rebuild it then.

and whoops...thanks for noticing, I do have the TH700R4, my mistake on the sig. I'll fix that now. Thanks for the advise, I'll just have the Transgo done then and the vette servo. I haven't driven it hard or raced it since I bought it new. Thank for the advice and reply!

Sounds like you drive it pretty responsibly. You should be quite happy with just the shift kit and the vette servo. Oh yeah, and make sure they get the tv cable set correctly once the work is done. That's the single biggest killer of 700r4's.

I had a TCI shift kit and corvette servo put in my 700R4 when it had just under 80K and it now has just over 160K and still works perfectly.
