T56 Experts (internals)
Im thinking about getting a billet/plus T56 shifter PN HURST 5061.
A guy selling a competition plus just told me, you dont need the stop feature, because the tranny has internal stops.
This is what wikipedia has to say.
"The transmission also features internal stops which render stopbolts on the shifter mechanism unnecessary."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg-Warner_T-56
I know wikipedia can be edited by anyone, but there is some quality control involved.
Anyway, is there any truth to this? Any input appreciated.

all tremec transmissions have internal stops. Ive been told this from many sources and from a few trans dealers. Tremec will tell you the same

But what about borg warner? (i realize Tremec IS borg warner) but was this true in 1995 or was it a recent development?
The place i was gonna call sells tremecs, and also factory T56s. They rebuilt cores.

I dont know how old/new this info is, its just what i have on hand. The literature that came with my TKO600 said the same.

Re: T56 Experts (internals)
It does have internal stops. Looking at the top of the trans, you will see the shifter hole at the rear and a hole with a plate on it at about the middle. The stops are in there, consisting of a plate with grooves for the shift gates and an iron block with a tab on it which is secured to the shift rail by a roll pin. The tab goes in the grooves of the plate, keeping the shift rail from going too far forwards or backwards. This keeps the forks inside from getting damaged or the keyways in the sychros from getting busted out. As for the shifters, the Comp/Plus is a great shifter, and if it's a good deal, I'd jump on it. I like the more solid feel of the Billet/Plus, but that's my two cents.

Thanks Uncle Skeletor, thats just the kind of info i was looking for. I dont think i slam my gears THAT hard, im a skinny guy, but i do like to powershift, and probably will a few times.
Ive been searching this, and most say there ARE stops, but there is a huge debate about EXTERNAL stops. Some say you CAN have them, others say you absolutely SHOULDNT use them because theres greater chances of damaging the tranny through mis-engaged gears. But i think its silly to protect the stops with stops, unless the factory ones are really weak.
I dont think the shifter the guy is selling is a comp plus. I think its a "rail shifter" or something. Its definately old, because i cant find it anywhere. But still its nice to learn about the stops.
