Transmission Swap, 83 Trans Am
Hello everyone,
I have an 83 Trans Am with a swapped out LG4 to a 350 engine with the 700r4 transmission. Just recently the crossmember for the transmission popped off on one end in the middle of driving. So now the tranny is slightly tilted in the back. It is going to be towed to the shop.
Since the auto was giving problems anyway, I want to swap it out to the T5 tranny.
My question is, if I got a donor 82 305 Trans Am with a 4speed manual (everything running) and a separate T5 from a V6 85 Firebird, what would I need for the swap additionally?
Thanks for your help.
I'll give you any extra detail, just ask.
I am pretty sure I have the 3.23 rear end with drum brakes if that makes a difference.
The car was being used as a daily school driver, with some racing on the side. Was going to take it to the track sometime soon to see what it could handle, had all the papers ready, but with the transmission failing as it did...
Hope that answers some questions.

And of course, to fix the problem with the car, which STILL has to be dealt with exactly the same with a T-5 as with the 700. Swapping to a T-5 doesn't overcome that.
For the time being, I'd suggest repairing the car, and keep looking for a whole V8 T-5 setup, complete; rather than trying to piece a bunch of that other stuff together. That's just asking for trouble.

That's how I did it... I got everything together waaayyy before i started, 5 mos ago. Even though there was a few things i didn't get until I had started ie, reverse tranny plug, t-5 torque arm, and new pedal rubbers. It still took over 25 hours and over 1000.00 to do. But the smile is priceless.

Alright.
Would you happen to know what a complete parts set would be?
Transmission
Clutch
Torque Arm
etc.
Thanks.

Re: Transmission Swap, 83 Trans Am
A complete parts set would be:
Bell housing & bolts
Flywheel & bolts
Clutch & bolts
Clutch disc
Pilot bearing
Throwout bearing
Fork
Hydraulics with lines & reservoir
Pedals
Transmission
Flywheel cover plate
Starter (maybe - yours might or might not work)
Shifter
Torque arm bracket & bushing
Speedo gear sleeve
Console top
Easiest cheapest best way to come up with it all, is to buy a WHOLE car, that's wrecked or rusted out or has a blown-up motor or something. Needs to be a V8 one. Some of that stuff, like the pilot & throwout bearings and the clutch & disc, you wouldn't want to use used ones though; those, you'll need to buy new. If you get lucky, you can find one in the junkyard that's complete, that you can strip yourself so you can see how everything goes; much easier than getting a pile of stuff and then trying to figure out how to put it together since you don't already know.
And of course, you'd STILL have to repair the broken part of your CAR where all of that bolts to; just changing what parts bolt up to it there, won't fix the broken place.

Re: Transmission Swap, 83 Trans Am
Thanks for the list!
Right now the transmission is being repaired back into place. The only reason I've been considering the above process because I cannot find a decent parts car, much less a crappy one and if repairing requires the piece to be welded into place, I'd rather have the transmission changed before I would have to take it apart again. I've been to a couple of junkyards to no success.
If anybody can recommend a good place to find FBodys in the New York City area, I'll appreciate it. I am also searching on websites (ebay, craigslist), but I am not having much luck. The only ones I have found are the ones listed above (car and transmission). I would be interested in transmissions from other states, but shipping would be a pain.
Thanks again.
