700r4 overkill?

i'm looking to buy a rebuilt 700r4 with less than 200 mi and corvette servos, kevlar bands, 2500 stall and all upgraded internals to handle 700 horsepower. it came out of a totaled '91 GTA. Its 500 bucks and i would just be running it with a 305 with around 250hp or possibly a 350. I'm just wondering if that sounds to good to be true and would its capability of handling 700hp hinder my low end power? Sorry in advance for any dumb questions. I'm still pretty new. This car will be my dd so i just want something reliable.

Re: 700r4 overkill?

I think the kit you got was from probuilt. And I believe that is the strip kit. It shifts really hard, and should only be used on the strip. I have the probuilt kit that can handle 600 hp, and when it shifts you know it. I only wonder how hard your kit will be. Anyone here from probuilt have any input?

I "do not" use Kevlar bands in any 700R4/4L60E transmissions.

Re: 700r4 overkill?

Kevlar never worked in anything well that I am aware of. It does not grip well, requires modifications that make it very user antagonistic. From what I have seen, it destroys the reverse input drum. I tried it in other transmissions many years ago with poor results, and dropped it. Alto has pretty much dropped most of their kevlar products. Kevlar is good for bullet proof vests, and not much more. GM's Hi-Energy material is top of the line when it comes to dynamic clutch or band material. Once I went with this in 1995-6, I never looked back.

Yea I'd find out what shift kit it has first, I have a Stage 1 shift kit and it's more than doable for a street car. It shifts quick and crisp under low throttle, but the second you're on it, the shifts are like thunder. I can't imagine going anything more for a dd.
