My torque arm is freely hanging off the transmission.

I'm hopefully getting a mount from a junkyard tomorrow, but my question has something to do about it. I just dropped a 383 that was just built, supposed to be around 500 crank horsepower. Well, I've never driven anything close to that so I don't really know how it should feel. But I certainly dont think it feels like 500hp when I get on it.

Now 2 years ago I had a 350 tpi in it with the torque are secure and that thing felt fast. Note: it had a 305 tpi originally. So I'm just wondering if having that torque arm secured will make a noticible difference.

Also I might as well throw this in too. I have 2.73 posi installed now, but have 4.56 gears waiting. How much of a difference will that make?

Re: My torque arm is freely hanging off the transmission.

well the whole torque arm thing is pretty serious id imagine you'll notice when its fixed.

if the 4.56 gears are goin in the 7.625 with the 28 spline axles watch it it will probably gernade since you are losing so much integrity with that itty bitty pinion. if its goin in one with the 26 spline axles it WILL gernade soon, with 500 horse.

also it wont feel like 500 horse because you have to figure in the approx. 20% power loss through the drivetrain so ittl feel like 390-410.

if you do swap in the 4.56 it will make one hell of a difference, my swap from 2.73 to 3.42 was extremly noticable but i wouldnt reccomend going over 3.73 for strength purposes... actually i wouldnt reccomend anything but a 9" for that much power. your choice, good luck

If you're driving your car without the torque arm hooked up your luckly if you didn't break something. The axel is free to rotate up and down without the torque arm hooked up. This may be putting your drive shaft in a bind causing the loss of power. Hook that thing up before you drive your car again!

Heh, yeah I'm currently hunting down that torque arm mount, but I just couldn't help but take it for a spin once it was up and running.

Im not really to sure about the rear end though. It would be whatever came with an '86 IROC.

Re: My torque arm is freely hanging off the transmission.

then its the 26 spline axles that will probably end up breaking. that 10 bolt is rated at 2,883 lbs-ft and if your motor is makin 400lbs-ft thats about 3,400 lbs-ft at the rear end once you figure your first gear and 2.73 rear gears... the 4.56's would make it 5,500lbs-ft at the rear so both cases your waaaay over.

you can either wait and see how long it lasts or save yourself the embarrasment/inconvienence when it breaks and put in a 9", 12 bolt, dana 60 or 44. look into currie and moser theyve got complete kits, good luck.

Stupid stupid stupid to take the car out with the torque arm not mounted right. btw, I vote for a Currie 9 inch. Nice piece that looks more factory like than a Moser rear.
