HHHHEEELLLLPPPP-700R4 wont engage 4th, but is fine with other gears.

I'm having trouble with my tranny that was rebuilt about 10 mos ago. It would find
neutral intermittently. I had the heads and cam replaced and now the car wont engage 4th at all and I have to drive it in D all the time. If I start off at a light in overdrive its fine until its supposed to shift to 4th, then it just revs up, but if I yank it into D the tranny reengages. It upshifts into the gears properly and downshifts like its supposed to. What would cause this problem? I'm really seriously thinking about dumping this car because of this. The car is a 92 305 TBI.

Try looking at the seals on the servo. I had a similar problem after rebuilding my trans a couple of years ago. All gears would work/shift fine but no OD. Turns out when I put the servo in, I pinched the seal around the 3/4 apply piston. Replaced it and everything was fine.

Sparks a flyin'.

Thats about all it could be. It shouldn't be the band, because then it should slip in second also (its a 2-4 band) and it shouldn't be the 3-4 clutches, because then it would slip in third also (see how that works?)

It would have to be due to a loss of pressure allowing clutches to disengage. I cut or blown servo seal could do that. I have also seen a broken reverse servo piston on a 4L80-E (you don't have one, just letting you know some crazy stuff can happen).

I would pull the servo cover and see whats going on in there.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my problem. Is this a complicated repair and does the tranny have to come out of the car again?

No, it doesn't have to come out. Worst case scenario is that you will have to lower it, but not remove it.
