Buying a junk yard rear end.

I have an 84H.O... but the last owner of the car CHANGED the rear end from one with 3.73s to 2.73. If the former owner is reading this, THANKS! Anyway, I am probably going to go to a junk yard and look for an f-car with 3.73 posi. How will I know it's good?

Thanks,
John

I think the 3.73/posi ended in '85. The '84 Trans Am's had the 3.73/posi/disc axles. '83s also had it, but their brake systems had non-metric fittings, so you'd have to convert your whole brake system (or find the right adapters).

I just did the 3.73/posi/disc swap. The axle cost me $150, parts to rebuild the brake system and axle's bearings/seals ran me $450. In the long run, a $200 gearset, $100 SLP take-off posi, and $200 install fee would've been cheaper!! Oh well, at least I got disc brakes.

As to the posi looking good, get a drain pan from the yard owner, and remove the cover; check for chunks of metal, that's all I can tell ya.

Look for an S10/S15 pickup or blazer. They have the same size rear, and I think that the 4cyl engines came with 3.73 gears. I don't know about finding the posi though--good luck. As far as seeing if it works, the only advice I can offer is to spin the rear wheels...
BTW the takeoff posi unit from SLP wouldn't work on your car (as far as I was told) as they fit the 3rd series carrier on cars 89-up. Hey GTA91, I have an SLP unit and DTS 3.73 gears for sale, both new in the boxes...let me know if your interested.
