What are signs of converter problems....

Read this and tell me what you think.....
Last Sunday morning I go out and start my RS.It is 0550hrs,cold as blue hell .Anyway while I'm putting my boots on I hear my idle drop down some then come back up.When I step outside I hear this loud clicking from around the trany. When it would click the rpms would drop.I'm going to check the converter bolts this evening to see if they are loose.A friend of mine says its the converter going bad.He was once a certified automechanic,he hurt his back several years ago and is no longer certified. He thinks he knows everything....anyone think he is right?

I can't handle needing a new torque converter right now.

I had this problem briefly. It turned out that the bellhousing to engine bolts had started to back out. There was like a good half inch of threads showing on the lower bellhousing bolts! It caused my flexplate to crack, but the converter seems to be OK.
