clunk behind seats

Hi i have an 87 ta and when ever i floor it i get a loud clunk or bang. I really need to now what this is befor i break my car.I don't now if its a tranny mount or the drive shaft but it's under to right behind the seats. It might be befor the seats i dont now but i feel it under the seats. Also how do i adjust the tranny linkage.

thanks matt

here's another probable cause.

You've already broken you car. it's the bracket that mounts your torque link to the tailhousing of the tranny. I could be wrong but this sounds dead-on like what my car sounded like when i bought it. the bolt that holds it together was stripped from a previous gearbox transplant. this all mounts up on the gearbox with some of the same bolts that mount the stock exhaust and stuff
hope this helps

Is the tranny mount the bar that goes under the middle of the transmission that bolts on either side of the car under the tranny? or is that the crossmember? I had a clunking sound the other day and I took it to the shop and one of the bolts were stripped. They retapped all six holes and put six new bolts in. I think I still hear a slight clunking sound.

Matt, The most probable cause is the transmission mount but it could be other things as mentioned above. Your linkage can not be adjusted that I am aware of. The T5 uses an internal rail shifter and the rails are not adjustable to my knowledge. However, some aftermarket shifters do have adjustable stops but I don't think that is what you are asking.

I had the same exact problem, it was the tranny mount. To explian why you hear the clunk behind your seats (which is what confused me so much when it happened to me) is that the exhaust mounts to the end of the tranny, so when you floor it, with the broken trans mount, your trans twists, lifting your exhaust, and where it hits is where it passes over the drive shaft. It took me forever to figure that one out, I was ready to replace my whole rear end.
