T-5 question (I have a noise)-kinda long

I went to Illinois with my girlfriend over Thanksgiving(Noble is the closest town to where her grandparents live). It's about 160 miles from here to there. When I got back home (I took my Iroc out there, got to hit 115 on those flat roads! Decided that was fast enough) I started noticing a whine type noise in first gear. Does anyone else have a noise like this? I don't know if it's always been there, or if I'm just now noticing it. I'm worried that I did something to the tranny when I took her uncles for a spin, when I left the driveway, I revved it up pretty good, like 5000 spinning the tires. That's what I think could maybe have caused the sound. It's nothing major, just a little sound. It's barely audible. It doesn't sound like it's grinding, so that's a relief. Anyone have any ideas?????

Please guys, I don't know if I'm damaging things by continuing to drive it. Again, it's only in first gear.

Same thing happen to mine started out as low whine, got worse over time,I let go for awhile because it didn,t get louder, about 3weeks ago
went to pull out and it sounded like blender full of ballbearings, turns out a bearing went but I also broke some teeth on the imput shaft,I,m rebuilding it now, might be worth it to pull it and check out before you did what I did by waiting too long

I suggest you rebuild it...at least pull it apart and inspect it. The countershaft thrust washer could have broken the little tab around and now grinding itself into the case (?) or you may have wasted a bearing. It is easier to fix before they blow up (duh) and saves a lot of headaches too.

thanks you two! I wish you could hear the sound it makes. It doesn't sound like grinding, it's a whirring sound, very low pitch. I guess I'll have to pull it over Christmas break. I've got finals coming over the next two weeks at college, so...

It is normal for T-5's to make a whirring noise at idle when the trans is in neutral, it is pretty subtle though.
Email me if you need advice on rebuilding/inspecting you trans. I have done a few, in fact i just picked one up for $25 + an old set of Z wheels that i am in the process of rebuilding....you can never have too many spares!

this is probably a stupid thought, but is your hand on the shifter when you hear the noise? if so try removing your hand and see if the noise goes away. Mine does it in second when my hands stays on the shifter im assuming its becuase of the extra pressure your hand creates

Yeah, I know what you're talking about, my dad used to yell at me when I would leave my hand on the shifter in his old S-10. But I don't have my hand on my shifter when it's making this noise, so.. any other guesses?

if it's real low noise don't worry about it, it's either the synchronizer or the bearings starting to wear out but not bad enough to pull the tranny apart right away. Mine was whining pretty loud before I rebuilt mine and I knew it needed a rebuild. If your going to keep the car and fix it up why not save your money and buy a good used T-56.

Well the noise is getting worse, yesterday it sounded horrible when I downshifted. Is this something I can fix at home, or should I have a transmission repair shop do it? Which shops do you guys trust? Last time I took it to AAMCO and they only would warrantee it for 90 days. At least I could get them to fix the shifter problem I was having. Internally the shifter is getting hung up so it won't return to the center on it's own.

It is something you can do at home. I would recommend buying the service repair manual for the T5 tranny b/c it has a lot of good information on what to do and not to do. I forgot where you can order it from. If you are interested, e-mail me and I'll search for my manual and see if it has a number on it. The manual trannies are very easy to rebuild and it's basically just making sure you take good notes/pics of how everything came off so you can put the new back on the same way. The service manual will help a lot in thisarea though.

The pain is taking the tranny out of the car. I had a shop want $275 to take the tranny out to see if they could figure out why my clutch was chattering. Me and my dad can take it out put the new clutch on and have the tranny ready to go back in the car in 1 hour. Of course we took it out 4 times within a month only to finally realize the flywheel had been ground down too much and the clearance was way off.

I've been doing a lot of research, and that T56 is looking really good. Though I only have the 3.42 rear end. If you wouldn't mind Bad Bird, I'll give you a holler and see if you could find where I can get that manual. Thanks!
