Got my 4L80E finally
Got my 4L80E finally
Been searching around and found an absolute steal on craigslist. 96 4L80E from a 2wd diesel with 130k on it. Fluid is cherry red and was in perfect working condition when removed due to a power train swap thanks to the mighty 6.5 puking a rod out the side of the block. Got the transmission for 350 bucks in full dress, converter, sensors, dip stick tube and all. Anyway now I would like to identify what converter its got in it. Money is sort of tight and I may just toss a shift kit in it and run it for now with the stock converter if it will stall at a usable speed. My thinking is my 350 will actually make it stall a little higher then what the mighty 6.5 could manage. My engine is making roughly the same torque, maybe a little more but HP is around 330ish compared to the 6.5's lame 150ish. The numbers on the converter that I could find are K150K3 which is stamped into the outer rim of the converter and then what appears to be a part number on a sticker near the hub which reads 24202989. Any ideas what speed it would be?

Does the diesel have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a SBC/BBC block? I thought the 6.2 and 6.5's used the BOP bellhousing. Factory stall is probably 1800 or less. Diesels don't need high rpm. Did it come with a computer?
Re: Got my 4L80E finally
Same bell housing. I've seen posted a stall speed anywhere from 1100-1800 but I can't find crap about how to decode the numbering thats stamped on it. On a 60E I believe a K meant 1650ish which would make this converter in my case usable, at least for the time being. No need for the computer. I'm applying the necessary code changes (gear ratio and solenoid state basically) to the 60E code and it should work just fine.

Very few TGO members use a 4L80E. It's a big heavy transmission. Looks like you're on your own for answers.
Re: Got my 4L80E finally
Actually its the same length as the 60E, maybe 1/2 inch longer but it does have a little more weight to it but not too bad. Anyway I know the wealth of info here is just unreal and was hoping somebody might happen to know something about this. Its worth a shot.
