Ok help, with Posi.

Ok I have been tring to get new gears for my Car all I am finding is V6 open and disk. I dont want to do the disk convert to my car. If I get an open rear with 3.42's all I have to do is add a posi unit right? Or is there more to it than that?

long as the holes in the posi carrier are cut for the same spline as your axles that's it. i think in 88 they went from 26 to 28 spline axles.

Next question, is this something I can do myself, or should I have someone do it? What I was thinking about is taking the posi out of my 2.77's and putting it in a 3.42 out of a V6. What do you think? By the way mine is an 87 the new one is out of an 85.

It's not really something you should try yourself. There are special tools needed to install the gears (a hydraulic press) and it's difficult to get the contact patch between the ring gear and pinion gear right where it needs to be.

As far as changing the gears around, as long as it's from a 10-bolt 7.5/7.625 inch you should be fine, the fact it's from a V6 shouldn't matter. BUT!!!!! There is a difference between gears above and below 3.08!!! The ones below are called two-series gears and new a 2 series positraction. Above they are three series and need a three series positraction. If the 2.77s and 3.42 are OEM, then they will not work with the same posi unit. It is possible to buy aftermarket gears above the 3.08 ratio that will fit the 2 series carrier. Richmond makes most gears both above and below 3.08 for both series of carrier.

I hope this helps, if you're confused just post again and we'll try and help you out,

Jason

I think I got it. The posi for my 3.08 numericly lower carrier will not fit a 3.08 numericly higher carrier.
