Need advice on rear end

I noticed that my diff was leaking fluid, when I jacked the car to get a better look I could see that it is coming from where the axle tubes join the center section,I've never had this happend until now,so what is the best thing to do,should I just weld the axle tubes or is there something else I should do?

Re: Need advice on rear end

Most GM rear ends have a small leak in this area. Is it leaking enough to be a problem? If it is then you might have broke the plug welds loose and slightly rotated the tube in the center casting. If this is the case then you probably should get another housing. Welding mild steel axle tubes to the cast iron center takes special welding skills.

Thanks for the response,it does leak quite a bit,if I weld it, will this take care of the problem, and is it even worth doing it?

Re: Need advice on rear end

If you weld it then you need to be sure that the tube is lined up correctly first. If the tube had turned in the housing then it must be set right again. The rear end must be disassembled before you weld it. It might be easier to get another rear end.

Here is some information on welding the tubes.
