T-5 rebuild
T-5 rebuild
has anyone here ever done a t-5 rebuild? i read the car craft article, but im sure there is more to it than what is there, i have plenty of experience with cars and mechanics, but manual tranny`s are new to me, also does anyone have a shop manual or know where i can get one just for the t-5? and how about locating parts for this thing, i can get a synchro rebuild kit for $150 but i know i need an input shaft and some other stuff.
thanks in advance.

My father and I rebuilt the t5 on my Bird. It is pretty straight forward. I recommend getting a mid-80s Chiltons book (the 2+" thick one), it has the complete teardown diagram and instuctions.
In the book I used they made no mention of the tranny being used in an f-body so you might have to look in the books and compare the pictures.
One note: Be careful with the case, its alum. and not real strong. When pounding out bearings it is easy to crack the case (trust me
).

I have done a few and am in the process of doing another one. I didnt have a book. It is pretty straight forward but there are a couple of ways to screw it up.
Most importantly, when removing the countershaft, the front bearing has to be pressed out of the case. Therefore you must remove the rear bearing out the back, pull the countershaft out then tap the front bearing out the front. The OEM front bearing has a lip on the outside of it. If you try to press it in, you will crack the case. I remove the countershaft by using a 1' piece of broom handle as a punch and tapping on the base of the countershaft gears.
Make sure you set the inputshaft pre-load and contershaft clearance to spec. If you need these, email me ans ill send them.
If you need help disassembling the tranny, let me know.

If you need the T5 rebuild manual, you can buy it from www.HANLONMOTORSPORTS.com . They have all parts for complete or partial rebuilds.
