Wont shift into 2nd!

For some reason this morning my car wouldnt shift from first to second gear. The rpms would keep getting higher, but no shift. I had to put the car in 2 while stopped then shift into Drive from there. This worked for a little while today, but now it is having trouble even doing that. Ive got the stock 700r4 tranny. Any tricks that i could do or does it just need to go in and have the tranny looked at? thanks.

A few questions, how is your car running, does it feel like its lsot some power? it could be alot of things causing this. I had a similar problem because 2 plug wires shorted out.

Most likely the governor gear has stripped. Common issue. The governor is located under the domed cover, drivers side (US) on the tail shaft. Carefully pop the cover off (light press fit) and pull the governor straight out. If it looks like an apple core (gear is even green at that!) then need a new gear. About 10 bucks.

Note: when putting the governor cover back on, do NOT hit the center of the cover. ONLY around the edges.

RBob.

Re: Wont shift into 2nd!

Could be the Governor or the 2-4 Band is wore out. Also the 2-4 servo could have an failure.
The Governor is the 1st item to check since its accessable without removing the trans and you will loose little fluid.
Next is remove the pan. Then you could take compressed air, blow into the little hole on the pan mating surface just under the servo housing and see if the servo actuates the band.
At the front area of the Valvebody, there is a 2"x1" opening/hole that allows you to see inside of the tranny. What you are looking at is the Rev/Input Drum. That is what the 2-4 Band clamps against. While blowing into the servo hole as mentioned, you can see the bottom side of the 2-4 Band and see it clamping down on the drum. If there is no movement, you have a Servo issue.
If you see bits and peices of the Band lining loose in there (as was my case last year), the 2-4 Band had parted company.

Did 4th gear start to feel weak, not feel like it was locking up or did you notice it going B4 the 2nd gear issue?

Re: Wont shift into 2nd!

The car still has all the power it used to and ill check on the governor gear. Is it possible that it still could be the 2-4 Band or 2-4 Servo if the shifting problem is just between first and second and not from 2-3 or 3-4? And last night i drove the car a few miles and it shifted just fine... so its off and on.

Re: Wont shift into 2nd!

ok, forget about that last post. Last night if i got lucky and the tranny felt like shifting from 1st to 2nd then it wouldnt shift from 2nd to 3rd. I could feel the transmission popping as if it wanted to shift into 3rd, but just never would shift.

How much should i be looking to pay to have a shop take out my 700R4 and put in a different one. That is without opening them up.
