GMTech, Vader..transmission pros...

I have a 700R4 in a 92 camaro that will not give any engine braking when you let off the gas and pull the shifter back into 3rd, 2nd, or 1st gear at normal speeds (35 to 55 mph). If you leave the trans in overdrive it will provide engine braking, it downshifts/upshifts great, no slippage i can detect...just does not slow the car any when you let off the gas and have it in any gear except overdrive.

I would say that either the overrun clutches are not applying, or are burnt. They prevent the foward sprag from overruning, thus giving engine braking. If it bothers you that bad, all I can say it take it out and check the clutches. There are only two, so it isn't very strong.

So is the overrun clutch really a problem? Or can i just drive it until it actually needs rebuilt? If they are burnt and whatnot..nothing should be grinding or making any destructive particles that will pass through the trans, correct?
I wouldnt think it is really detrimental to the trans and it seems you tell the same.

Thanks,
nick

Providing that they are burnt, most of the clutch material is already in the pan and sucked up into the filter. If you keep using lower gears, though, the bare clutches (down to metal) and the clutch pack steels will be rubbing on each other, and this may pass some metal through the trans.
