T5 and No 5th gear
ok i got a junk yard t5 out of a 305 86 camaro. I have no idea how the transmission ran before it was pulled but i did put the trans into all 5 gears and reverse after it was pulled and the input and output shaft spun like they were supposta. I put the transmission in my 89 camaro with a new hurst shifter and love the way it feels. gears 1-4 and R work fine. But when i try to go into 5th the shifter goes up and over but when i let off the clutch it grinds and kicks it out, like it isnt fully engaging. I backed the shifter stops all the way out on the hurst shifter and still no luck. Do you guys have any ideas of what i could do besides going back to the old shifter? I would rather have a 4 speed than the old shifter back in. Oh yes and i did put brand new gear oil in since its a nwc t5
Re: T5 and No 5th gear
Make sure that the flywheelhousing and transmission is not loose and the alignment is correct. If this is OK, the synchroniser and more specific the blocking rings will probabky be worn or damaged. You can download the entire service manual of the T5 on www.drivetrain.com (search-button --> T5). The 5th gear and his synchro houses in the transfercase, so dissassembly will be easy (no need to open the transmission case). I did it myself for the 3th gear and although I never saw a transmission from the inside before, all went very easy. Good luck.
BTW the blocking costs 25 USD.
